Dancer finds her footing at Truman College

Truman College student Prishina Coleman has had a passion for dance since she was a child – and now she is working on making it a career.

As a 2018 graduate of the Chicago High School for the Arts, Truman College wasn’t immediately on her radar. When she learned she could play volleyball and earn a scholarship to help with tuition, she was excited to continue her education there.

Once at Truman, Prishina did well is classes, and felt supported by staff, her volleyball coach, and her teachers – especially in math, which is not her favorite subject. Outside of class, not only did she play on Truman’s volleyball team, but she started the Dance Club. Prishina says “dance is everything to me – modern, ballet, jazz, West African, hip hop – I love it all.”

She loves it so much, in fact, that she will be transferring to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the fall of 2020, where she will major in dance. Her ultimate goal is to have her own studio and be a professional choreographer.

She says that getting into U of I was a huge struggle with both academic and dance audition components of the process, but she never gave up – now she is one step closer to achieving her dream.
