Truman College 2022 valedictorian
Alvaro Mendieta arrived to the United States from Ecuador eight years ago with limited English skills and big dreams. With his cousin’s encouragement, he enrolled in English as a Second Language classes at Truman College.
He advanced through his courses and his English skills improved. When he was ready, Alvaro enrolled in the Gateway Scholars program, which gave him the opportunity to take college credit courses at a significant discount.
Through a combination of his own hard work, support from Truman College faculty, and the values passed down from his parents, Alvaro earned his associate degree in science. He was named the Truman College 2022 valedictorian and was honored at the 2022 Commencement ceremony.
Alvaro now has his sights set on a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
