Studying business management at Harold Washington College is a natural progression of family tradition for Natalie Guzman. She’s a first-generation Mexican American who grew up watching her parents run businesses in Mexico and Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood. Natalie’s upbringing, a high school entrepreneurship class, and an introductory business course with Professor Pendleton at Harold Washington solidified her desire to continue her family’s legacy.
“It’s an honor to take up business,” Natalie said. “It’s something my parents have always been interested in. I feel like I’m doing it justice for them.”
When an opportunity to expand her entrepreneurship goals presented itself, Natalie was immediately interested. She saw an email about an apprenticeship opportunity in commercial property management and applied. Following an interview process, Natalie was accepted as an apprentice at Hines, a real estate investment company, under BOMA/Chicago.
Natalie has been working at Hines for two months now with a supportive team of eight.
“I can ask questions, and everyone just wants everyone to succeed and grow” she said. “I’m very happy and blessed to be in this space.”
Natalie is also attending as many company events as possible to network and gain insight from others in the commercial property management field. Her manager has been a huge influence, and the two often talk about school and careers.
When Natalie completes her apprenticeship, she’ll have obtained a commercial property management certificate. She’s excited about the potential of staying in commercial property management but isn’t ruling out following in her parents’ footsteps of residential property management. Whatever she decides, she’s grateful for the knowledge and opportunities that her apprenticeship has afforded her.
“In just a few months, this apprenticeship has already changed my life,” she said. “I’ve dipped my toes into so much already. In two years, I’ll be a pro when it comes to everything in the commercial property world.”
Her advice for other students considering apprenticeships?
Absorb every moment, piece of advice, and knowledge that you can. Take advantage of every opportunity and connection—it’s going to benefit you in so many ways,” she said.
