Lashun

For decades, City Colleges has felt like a place full of opportunities where Lashun could grow personally and professionally. 

Lashun earned her GED through City Colleges of Chicago’s Adult Education program. She completed CNA training at Olive-Harvey College, earned multiple nursing credentials through City Colleges, participated in the work-study program, and relied on the Child Development Laboratory School while raising her two daughters. Those resources helped her continue her education while balancing her responsibilities. 

“I started with very humble beginnings,” she said. “But I never gave up on myself.” 

Earning her GED sparked a lifelong educational journey for Lashun that took her from certified nursing assistant (CNA) to licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), and advanced practice registered nurse. Today, she is completing her doctorate while inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals as a CNA instructor at Olive-Harvey’s South Chicago Campus. 

After building a successful nursing career in critical care and corporate healthcare, Lashun returned to City Colleges as an instructor. Teaching had always been her calling. Even while in nursing school, she regularly tutored classmates, simplifying complex concepts and helping others succeed. Now, Lashun teaches future CNAs at City Colleges, and her passion for student success extends beyond the classroom. She mentors students, shares her own educational journey, and encourages adult learners to believe in themselves. 

“I step into the GED classrooms whenever I can,” she said. “I tell them a little bit about my story and remind them that it’s possible.” 

For Lashun, one of the greatest rewards is watching students gain confidence. Many stay in touch long after completing her course, sharing career milestones and thanking her for changing their lives. 

Looking back, Lashun credits City Colleges not only for her education but also for providing the support services that helped her persevere. She recalls how the Career Center helped her build her resume, prepare for interviews, and ultimately secure a role as a corporate nurse. Her advice to current students is simple: take advantage of every opportunity. 

“Utilize your resources,” she said. “Don’t just go to class. Explore your campus, ask questions, and use everything available to help you succeed.” 

While Lashun’s work at City Colleges is centered on preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals, her commitment to service extends beyond campus. Whether mentoring students, serving through her church, or supporting members of her community, she is known for bringing warmth, encouragement, and hope to those around her. Today, LaShun is paying forward the encouragement and support she once received, helping others discover their own path to success.
