Pictured are Dean Cheryl Freeman and Michael Jones celebrating Michael’s achievement in the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program at Olive-Harvey College.
Michael Jones entered the program with early Olive-Harvey College hands-on experience in the trades. Beginning at age 12, he worked alongside his grandfather, a licensed electrician, gaining practical exposure to electrical work.
After his grandfather’s passing during Michael’s sophomore year of high school, Michael completed a short carpentry program following graduation. Strong technical instincts led him to pursue formal learning opportunities and increase exposure to formal codes, safety standards, or collaborative work environments.
Michael enrolled in the EVI program to expand his skill set and formally apply both his electrical and carpentry background to a new trade pathway. At the start, his biggest concern was working with others and communicating effectively.
During the program, Michael identified the most challenging aspect as learning formal rules, safety protocols, and electrical codes—particularly understanding NEC requirements and proper use of PPE based on voltage levels. The program required him to understand the why behind safety and compliance are so important. This shift marked a significant
growth point in his development as a technician.
A key turning point occurred as Michael built strong relationships with his classmates. Through collaborative labs and shared learning experiences, he discovered the value of teamwork and peer support. He described this as the moment when things “clicked,” realizing he did not have to navigate his career alone. Michael found hands-on testing with multimeters and digital diagnostic tools to be especially valuable. While he had prior experience performing electrical tasks, learning how to formally test, verify, and validate his work using professional tools gave him a new level of confidence and precision. Following completion of the program, Michael experienced both professional and personal growth in communication and self-advocacy.
Michael no longer hesitates to speak up or engage with others and describes himself today as “a confident and happy 20- year-old with multiple trade backgrounds.” The program reshaped Michael’s understanding of career pathways.
Through the program, he gained confidence in his skills and understanding of the industry and successfully secured full-time employment as an entry-level electrician, working under the supervision of a licensed electrician, with benefits.
