Kennedy-King College’s Student Services team took service to new heights by volunteering as a team at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) last Thursday. The team of 50, including additional staff from Academic Affairs, the Business Office, and District Office teams, spent the day in hands-on volunteer work and team-building activities while supporting students and the Chicago community at large during what was called the GCFD Takeover.

In addition to packing an impressive 10,500 pounds of carrots for people and families facing food insecurity, the GCFD Takeover celebrated City Colleges’ partnership with the organization. Each of the seven City Colleges operate on-campus food pantries to support the growing number of college students in need of access to healthy food. At the same time, they strengthened team dynamics across departments through activities and vital conversations.

“The Greater Chicago Food Depository has become an extension of the Kennedy-King College family,” said Dr. Allison Rose, dean of student services at Kennedy-King. “This takeover was our way of giving back to a partner that continuously helps us support and nourish our students. It was incredible to see our team come together and make such a tangible impact for the broader community.”

Events like the GCFD Takeover serve as a powerful reminder about prioritizing well-being for City Colleges’ students and the commitment each college has to its community.
