Tyshawn Allison always knew he would go to college. Growing up on Chicago’s west side, he developed a love for learning early on.
When Viktoriia Drozdovska moved to the United States two and a half years ago from Ukraine, her future was uncertain. She had not planned to pursue an education in the U.S., but after arriving, Viktoriia realized that finding a path to academic and personal success was essential. Her journey began at Wilbur Wright College, where she worked to master the English language, earn her diploma and discover her passion for technology.
Adapting to a new country and learning a new language was not easy, but Viktoriia embraced the challenge. After completing English as a second language and high school diploma prep classes, her math professor encouraged her to pursue higher education at City Colleges of Chicago and to consider transferring to a four-year university.
Viktoriia’s interest in computer science sparked early in her journey. She enrolled in various programs and internships that equipped her with the skills needed to succeed in the tech industry. Through the Year Up Program, which provides young adults with training and internships in the technology sector, Viktoriia gained valuable hands-on experience. While managing a full-time internship, she also participated in One Million Degrees, a program that offers career sessions, mentorship, and scholarships to support students through their academic journey.
“One Million Degrees was a great experience,” Viktoriia shared. “We had access to career sessions with professionals and mentorship opportunities in our field of interest.”
Through the support of the PepsiCo Foundation Uplift Scholarship, Viktoriia was able to focus on her education at Wilbur Wright College without the added stress of financial burdens. “The PepsiCo Foundation Uplift Scholarship really helped me pay for my tuition while I was balancing my internship and classes,” Viktoriia said.
In December 2024, Viktoriia graduated from City Colleges of Chicago and was ready to take the next step in her academic journey. In January 2025, she began working toward her bachelor’s degree in information systems with artificial intelligence at Northwestern University. Viktoriia credits her success to the support she received from the City Colleges of Chicago, programs that helped her thrive, and the donors who made it all possible.
“I feel well prepared now because of the support of City Colleges of Chicago,” Viktoriia said. “Thank you to all the donors—you’re doing a great job supporting students from different backgrounds and obstacles. Your support helps us graduate and achieve our dreams.”
