Daley College President Janine Janosky shared her expertise on a panel with other Seal of Excelencia leaders in higher ed as Excelencia in Education launched their “30 years of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs): Improving Access to Quality for 30%.” report.

The report includes  an updated annual analysis on Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) for the 2023-24 academic year, which shows more than 600 institutions are now HSIs, representing 20% of colleges and universities yet enrolling 30% of all undergraduates and over 60% of all Latino undergraduates. These HSIs graduate 31% of all students and 66% of Latino students nationwide.

There are now 602 HSIs, 418 Emerging HSIs (eHSIs), and 257 HSIs that offer graduate programs (gHSIs). The release includes a Factbook on HSIs, an HSIs Fact Sheet, HSIs Infographics, interactive StoryMapping, a dashboard, and an essay on creating a list of HSIs.

Under President Janosky’s leadership, Richard J. Daley College earned the prestigious Seal of Excelencia in 2023 for going beyond enrollment to demonstrate intentionality and impact in serving Latino students while serving all. At the time, President Janosky said, “The Seal affirms our commitment to intentionally serving our Latino students, and we are proud to implement impactful quality initiatives and programs supporting the success of our students in achieving their goals and increasing graduation and retention rates.”

In 2024, Richard J. Daley College and Arturo Velasquez Institute’s Community Health Worker Program was selected as a finalist for the 2024 Examples of Excelencia. Program finalists are recognized for intentionality in serving Latino students through culturally relevant, evidence-based practices. The Community Health Worker program is among 18 Examples of Excelencia finalists from around the country this year.
