Olive-Harvey College Assistant Mathematics Professor Ioana Sancira will be participating in the 2025 Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program at Northwestern University’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC).

The RET program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, offers K-12 and community college educators the opportunity to participate in advanced materials science research alongside world-renowned faculty and researchers.

“Students may not remember every formula or equation, but they will remember the real-life projects they tackled and the hands-on experiences that made math meaningful,” Iona said.

During the eight-week summer program, Ioana will engage in full-time, hands-on research designed to enhance her ability to bring real-world STEM experiences into the classroom. Ioana, and her fellow participants, will present their findings at a closing symposium.

This professional development opportunity supports educators in translating complex scientific concepts into impactful learning experiences for their students. Ioana is eager to share her new insights and skills with her students and colleagues in the upcoming academic year.
