On a day filled with inspiration, innovation, and empowerment, Dawson Tech Institute  proudly hosted the Pink Power Project: She Builds, She Powers, She Leads — an event that celebrated trailblazing women in the utilities and construction industries, while uplifting the next generation of young female leaders.

Honoring Powerhouse Women in the Industry: This year’s Pink Power Project honored five exceptional women whose leadership and accomplishments continue to reshape traditionally male-dominated fields. The She Builds, She Powers, She Leads award was presented to:

  • Maria Bocanegra, President of Peoples Gas
  • Nichole Owens, Vice President of ComEd
  • Stephanie Benison, CEO of Prosperity Property
  • Giovanni Broughton, President of Structure Re-Right
  • Jaime Redmond, COO of Redmond Construction

Each honoree shared her powerful journey, offering both inspiration and practical advice to Chicago Public School students in attendance. Their stories reflected resilience, determination, and a passion for building up not only structures—but future leaders.

Creating Pathways: Hands-On Power Sessions

Students didn’t just listen—they got their hands busy. Five immersive “Power Sessions” were designed to give participants real-life exposure to the trades:

  • 💎 Jewels of Strength: Build Your Own Jewelry Box
  • 🏠 Frame Your Future: Bird House Framing Workshop
  • Power Up: Hands-On Electricity Activity
  • 🔧 Pipes & Power: Mastering Plumbing Connections
  • 🔥 Gas & Go: Hooking Up Appliances Safely

These sessions sparked creativity, built confidence, and gave students practical experience to fuel their interest in construction, utilities, and STEM careers.

Investing in the Future: Dawson also proudly recognized three outstanding students who received $2,000 scholarships from the Redmond Foundation. Their achievements and aspirations stood as a testament to the impact of access, mentorship, and support.

 Student Voices:

“My experience at the Pink Power Project felt incredibly uplifting. It made me realize that even though Black women aren’t abundant in architecture, that doesn’t mean we won’t be there for each other.”

“The overall experience was amazing, and I’ve been to a couple of trips with my school but this was top tier! I love seeing and hearing stories of women who went through the same thing I’m trying to succeed in.”

“I honestly loved every moment of this event! I hope I can attend more in the future!”

“This is a great opportunity for young women to get into the trades. It was cool to see other successful women, especially in management.”

“Where do I sign up?”

“My experience was amazing and I’m super grateful to receive this opportunity.”

Looking Ahead: The Pink Power Project is more than an event—it’s a movement. By showcasing what’s possible and connecting young women with mentors who’ve broken barriers, Dawson Tech Institute continues to light the path forward for future leaders in the trades.
