Seven Malcolm X College members of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an academic honor society, and Malcolm X College President David Sanders returned home from the honor society’s national honor convention with two new awards.
The students attended in PTK Catalyst 2024 in Orlando, Florida in early April. For three days the students along with faculty and staff advisors participated in workshops, met with college transfer guides, and took advantage of networking opportunities.
During the convention, Malcolm X College’s student-led Alpha Lambda Iota chapter of PTK Honor Society won the regional award for the NMDP. Phi Theta Kappa and the organization formerly known as National Marrow Donor Program and Be the Match, have partnered for two years. Malcolm X’s PTK chapter hosted cheek swab drives over two days during the fall and spring semesters. This year, Malcolm X College’s PTK chapter boasted the most donor sign-ups in the northeast region. They were also highlighted for signing up a donor match who later saved someone’s life.
Additionally, PTK recognized President Sanders, along with 19 other college administrators, with the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during Catalyst. PTK Faculty Co-Advisor and instructor Carla Thomas nominated President Sanders for his commitment to student success in and out of the classroom, the educational and personal opportunities afforded to them, the support services available, and pathways to transfer and employment.
Earlier this year, President Sanders had this to say about winning this award:
“Creating a culture of excellence and student success is my top priority as a college leader,” President Sanders said. “Malcolm X College students are the reason why I do this work, so to be nominated by them for this honor is both humbling and motivating.”
