City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor, Juan Salgado was presented with the 2023 Ohtli Award on Friday. The award is one of the highest honors given to citizens living outside of Mexico. It recognizes individuals who have empowered the lives of Mexican nationals who live abroad. Consul General of Mexico in Chicago, Ambassador Reyna Torres Mendivil presented the honor.

Recently, City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Juan Salgado was presented with the 2023 Ohtli Award  by Ambassador Reyna Torres Mendivil, the Consul General of the Mexican Consulate in Chicago. The award is one of the highest honors given to those living outside of Mexico working to empower Mexican citizens abroad.

The  event  was held at Harold Washington College on December 8, 2023 and other event attendees included Illinois State Rep. Edgar Gonzalez Jr; Illinois State Sen. Celina Villanueva, Ald. Jeylu Gutierrez, Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez, Deputy Mayor of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights Beatriz Ponce De León, Harold Washington College President Daniel Lopez, City Colleges’ Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Staff Veronica Herrero, and Latino Policy Forum CEO Sylvia Puente.

This high honor Ohtli means “path” or “road” in Náhuatl, the Uto-Aztecan language. The award is given once annually and consists of a medallion, silver rosette and a diploma. The medal depicts an Aztec god cutting grass with a machete. The symbolism of the name signifies the  idea of opening a path for others. The first award was given out in 1996.
