City Colleges of Chicago and Malcolm X College in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago came together on August 29 to sign a  Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) to offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at the consulate.

“We want to empower our community through education and make sure that they are bilingual, bicultural, and binational. We’re thankful for City Colleges of Chicago and Malcolm X College for bringing the opportunity to the members of our community to learn English at the Consulate,” said Ambassador Reyna Torres Mendivil.

“We are grateful to partner with the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago to offer ESL classes at the consulate because it is a great opportunity to increase access to our programming to yet a wider pool of prospective students,” said Chancellor Juan Salgado, City Colleges of Chicago. “By meeting students where they are, we are breaking down barriers and creating access.”

Classes are scheduled to start on September 25 and run for 12 consecutive weeks. The classes will be open to 30 students and at no cost to the participants. Any level of learner is accepted, from beginner to advanced. The classes cover reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary skills.

“The benefits of taking an ESL course are numerous, from enhancing job opportunities to building social connections. ESL classes allow students to gain exposure to different cultures, broaden their perspectives, and allow them to communicate confidently in English,” said President David Sanders, Malcolm X College.

To date, City Colleges of Chicago works with about 40 community partners to offer Adult Education classes at their locations. Classes taught include ESL and the Illinois High School Diploma.
