Students from Wright College’s Center for Excellence in Engineering and Computer Science were front and center at a showcase hosted Thursday night.
The fourth annual “Engineering Ideas” event was held on December 8, 2022, at Wright’s Engineering Center to give 16 groups of students from Wright’s engineering and computer science programs a chance to present research projects to their peers and a panel of judges.
Dr. Doris Espiritu, the dean of the Center of Excellence for Engineering and Computer Science at Wright College, organizes the event each year to give students in the program a chance to share their ideas and gain valuable experience in presentation and shared scholarship.
Student projects were developed with problem-solving in mind and included creative ways to improve people’s lives, like a food storage container that uses sensors to detect spoiled food, a solar-powered infrared heater for public bus shelters, a fire-fighting robot, a handlebar-mounted crash detector that helps bicyclists avoid automobile accidents, and a light-up crash prevention system powered by human footsteps in crosswalks.
The projects were judged by a panel that included winners of past “Engineering Ideas” events and industry leaders from corporations like tech giant Google and audio products company Shure.
Later in the showcase, Dr. Espiritu announced the winner of the Fall 2022 TCP-CTA Transfer Scholarship, sophomore Shlesha Patel. The $5,000 award, administered by the City Colleges of Chicago Foundation and made possible by sponsors Transit Capital Partners and Chicago Transit Authority, will support Patel when she transfers to the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign’s Grainger College of Engineering next fall thanks to Wright’s guaranteed transfer admission agreement with the university.
This year’s “Engineering Ideas” winning team will be announced later this month.
