Lauren Richards of Statesmen’s women’s basketball team graduating with Associate in Arts degree and 4.00 GPA.

CHICAGO – Lauren Richards (Vernon Hills H.S.), a member of the Kennedy-King College women’s basketball team in 2019-20, has been selected as the school’s valedictorian for the June 27 virtual graduation.

Richards, who owns a cumulative grade-point average of 4.00 at Kennedy-King, will graduate with an Associate in Arts degree.

Among the colleges Richards is considering transferring to in the fall are Governors State University and Georgia State University. A social work major, Richards’ goal is to earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.

Outside of her academic and athletic commitments at Kennedy-King, Richards works with disabled adults and wants to pursue a career in this field with an emphasis on human rights.

During the 2019-20 women’s basketball season, Richards competed in 27 games and garnered 13 starts. The 5-foot, 6-inch center averaged 4.3 rebounds per game and totaled 20 steals, 17 assists, 13 points and five blocks for the campaign.

In her best all-around performance of the year, Richards established personal bests of 15 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a victory over Harry S Truman College on February 18. She had a season high four assists in a win against Truman on January 28.

Richards is the first City Colleges of Chicago student-athlete to be named as a valedictorian since Idris Ayantoye of the Malcolm X College men’s soccer team received the honor in the 2014-15 academic year.
