For Jacqueline Urquizo, Daley College feels like home. She took Early College classes at Daley in high school, earned her associate in arts from the college, and now, she’s back as an employee.
Truman College Veterans Services Specialist Lisa Slater found a sense of community as a military police officer. She now is cultivating that same sense of community among veterans at Truman.
Lisa’s role to help veterans understand their educational benefits, enroll at Truman, and inform them about the support services available to them. But she goes above and beyond to ensure students feel welcomed and supported. It’s most important to her to connect with every veteran student she comes across by sitting down and talking about their branch of service and their goals.
“The most rewarding part of my job is watching [students] be successful and graduating and transferring,” she said. “People just need someone to care, to listen to them, to help them, and that’s what I want to do every day.”
Lisa is Truman College’s 2024 faculty Luminary Award winner.
