Kim Hitchcock has been a driving force in shaping the English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum at City Colleges for almost two years now, but she’s no stranger to City Colleges. She taught at Truman College for 21 years before taking on a new challenge as the ESL Curriculum Specialist for the district. In this position, Kim supports six of the City Colleges, working to improve existing ESL courses and create new ones, ensuring that ESL education continues to evolve and meet student needs.

This September, Hitchcock presented at the two-day Forum for Excellence hosted by the Illinois Community College Board in Peoria, Illinois. It was a chance for her to share her expertise on expanding opportunities for ESL students while gathering feedback and new ideas from other ESL teachers and administrators. Her presentation, “From ESL Pre-Beginning Literacy to College Transition: Expanding Opportunities for Students through Adult Educator Curriculum Project Teams,” highlighted how City Colleges has built a comprehensive curriculum that takes students from the earliest stages of English literacy to college readiness.

After showcasing her work to a wider audience, Hitchcock is excited to implement the feedback from educators across the state and learn from their approaches to elevate City Colleges’ ESL program to new heights.
