Jonathan Lopez
Jonathan Lopez fulfilled his childhood dream of attending college, but in the fall of 2008, he realized that dream was a lot more difficult than he thought it would be.
Kennedy-King College student Joseph Rice applied for the Timuel D. Black Jr. Scholarship and Fellowship Program with a deep passion for history and admiration for the legacy of Timuel D. Black Jr. His love for Black’s contributions to Chicago’s history inspired him to take part in the fellowship this year.
Joseph learned many valuable lessons during his fellowship, but the most transformative one was discovering his ability to lead and how to use this skill to empower his community.
A big highlight of his fellowship year was an unforgettable trip to Alabama with other student leaders. Joseph shared, “Being together with people from different cultures and upbringings and coming together to create something beautiful—is truly amazing.”
Joseph received the Timuel D. Black Jr. Scholarship, which played a crucial role in supporting his education at City Colleges. To the donors who made this opportunity possible, he offers a heartfelt message:
“Thank you. A lot of the experiences would have never been obtained without your support assistance and funding.”
