Lakina has always wanted to go to college. Even after having a child shortly after high school, she never let go of her dreams of higher education.
The 2025 Kennedy-King valedictorian learned about City College’s Partners in Education program offered through the Chicago Housing Authority and received a scholarship. The scholarship afforded Lakina the opportunity to attend school at no cost—removing all concerns about going into debt for her education.
Lakina recommends City Colleges because of the various programs and opportunities that are available for students to attend school free of charge.
As a mother of five, whose children have been with her every step of the way, Lakina gets emotional thinking back on her journey. She accomplished her goals and now, she encourages everyone she knows to follow their dreams.
