Anthony Gomez-Ledezma began his college journey at a four-year institution but quickly felt out of place in his initial field of study. In search of a fresh start, he discovered City Colleges of Chicago.

Richard J. Daley College happened to be the nearest location to Anthony’s home where COVID-19 vaccinations were being offered. At his appointment, he learned about the college’s programs and offerings. By the following fall, he was enrolled in an Associate in Engineering Science program.

Anthony’s college experience was greatly shaped by the people around him. A handful of dedicated teachers motivated him to attend class regularly and engage fully in his studies. They taught him the importance of being a student that supports others and creating a vibrant campus life. Mentors inspired him to realize his potential and encouraged him to move into challenging spaces that fostered growth.

No one goes through college without being shaped by someone else in some way, shape, or form,” Anthony said of his experience.

The turning point in Anthony’s educational journey came when he received a scholarship from the City Colleges of Chicago Foundation.

“I received the City Colleges of Chicago Foundation Scholarship, which was critical in expediting my education,” he said. “It relieved me of any financial burden and allowed me to focus my time and energy on schoolwork rather than working.”

Looking ahead, Anthony plans to become a computer and software designer. He also aspires to create a grassroots nonprofit organization that will support the educational system in his family’s hometown in Mexico. His primary focus will be on STEM education and elevating students of color, especially those underrepresented in higher education.
