Medical Assisting as a way to help people

Even before Adriana Oceguera graduated from Curie High School in 2016, she knew she wanted a career helping people. It was that desire that led her to the health sciences programs at Malcolm X College, where she’s currently studying to be a medical assistant. The 21-year-old South Side resident is getting the most out of her Malcolm X experience—Adriana regularly takes advantage of advising, the Wellness Center, and tutoring.

She balances school and work, but being a Star Scholar makes it manageable.

“The Star Scholarship has been a huge help,” said Adriana. “Since I’m basically attending City Colleges for free, I was able to cut down to working part-time and focus more on my academic goals.”

Adriana aims to eventually complete her bachelor’s degree, but her immediate plans are to complete the MA program in 2019 and get started working as a medical assistant.
