While still a student at Kennedy-King College with plans to graduate in the Spring of 2027, Stormi’s summer is now one she will never forget. Her internship turned into a full-time job complete with benefits, an upward trajectory, and a career that fills the soul.

“I had no idea an internship would change my life, but it did and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” she said.

It all began with a recommendation from Dr. Prioleau-Byrd, PhD, director of Career Development at Kennedy-King College and an interview in the late spring for the internship. And while there are many internships available, some don’t pay which can be a nonstarter for many people working, going to college, and supporting themselves.

Stormi’s paid internship was made possible by a historic donation to Kennedy-King College from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. The funds provided a stipend for her demanding role, proving to be a true moment where preparation met opportunity.

“I’m a self-starter and I know if you do the work, the benefits of that work will come. This internship converting to a job working with the public is something I’d never thought I’d be doing but I’m determined, skilled and can rise to any occasion,” said Stormi. “I’m very thankful that someone like MacKenzie sees the value in people and in education. She may not know it yet, but she just changed everything for me.”

Stormi grew up on Chicago’s south side where she also attended grammar school and still lives. Over the rest of the summer and fall, Stormi will serve as a full-time employee with the State Treasurer’s Office and work directly with community members. She will serve as its Civic Engagement Specialist.

“Her professionalism, dedication, and ability to connect with diverse audiences allowed her to make meaningful contributions while gaining valuable workplace experience,’ said Dr. Prioleau-Byrd.

Stormi will graduate in the Spring of 2027 from Kennedy-King College with plans to continue her education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work all while working full-time.

Upon reflection, Stormi knows she’s only get started.

“It was always one of my goals to work for the state and help people. Now I’m doing it so I can check that off my list,’ said Stormi. “I have plans to keep being of service to others and so I will keep learning all I can to continue to be of service to Chicago.”
